    Este trabajo presenta un análisis de los cambios ocurridos en Europa Occidental entre los siglos IV y VI a partir de un rastreo de las tesis aducidas desde los debates del s. XVIII hasta las últimas tendencias historiográficas. Habida cuenta de los desacuerdos entre los distintos enfoques, se apuesta por elaborar un balance de la nueva historiografía en puntos clave como la escala de las incursiones bárbaras, las diversas formas de lidiar con ellas, las modalidades y límites de las relaciones entre estados sucesores e Imperio Oriental, los acontecimientos climáticos y los cambios religiosos.

    The text presents an analysis of the changes that happened within Western Europe between the fourth and the sixth centuries by tracing the different theses proposed by scholars since the eighteenth century to the latest historiographical trends. After reviewing the main disagreements between those perspectives, the article seeks to assess recent historiography by looking into key issues such as the scale of the barbarian raids and the diverse ways of dealing with them, the channels and limits of the relationship between the barbarian kingdoms and the Eastern Roman Empire, the impact of climate patterns, and religious change.
