El presente trabajo examina el desarrollo de las artes pictóricas en Costa Rica desde inicios del siglo XX hasta los años setenta, cuando comienza a reconocerse el movimiento posmoderno. En su primera parte, analiza la producción pictórica de las primeras siete décadas del s. XX en Costa Rica. En la segunda, el paulatino proceso de transformación que permite una nueva forma de pensamiento y creación pictórica. Finalmente, examina el trabajo de un grupo de artistas significativos del período de los años setenta, cuya producción fue influenciada por la revolución sexual resultante de las ideas políticas del momento

This article gives us an overview of the development of the pictorial arts in Costa Rica from the beginning of the 20th century until the seventies when the postmodern movement was becoming recognized. At this time, postmodernism was not fully accepted in the Costa Rican art world. However the cultural revolution of the sixties and seventies began to change the mentality of the artistic community. The first part of this article examines the significance of what was done in Costa Rican pictorial art in the first seven decades of the 20th century. The second part of the article explores how the artistic community was transformed little by little to give birth to a new way of thinking and painting. Finally, the article reviews the work of a group of artists that were important during this time. Furthermore, it explores how their art was influenced by the sexual revolution, was a response to the political ideas of the time and incorporated mixed media and new ways of representation in pictorial arts
