Este documento presenta una nueva edición de Galdós, novelista, de Clarín, haciéndola coincidir con la accidentada conmemoración del centenario de la muerte del novelista. Galdós es considerado el mayor novelista español de su tiempo y Clarín, un exigente crítico. Los dos autores coinciden en su análisis en profundidad de la sociedad española y su sintonía con los mejores novelistas europeos de su tiempo. Además, creían que España necesitaba una «nueva novela», acorde con las tendencias europeas más avanzadas y que fuera un instrumento útil para analizar los cambios que se iban produciendo en la sociedad española, denunciando de paso prejuicios que lastraban su modernización.

This document presents a new edition of Galdós, novelist, by Clarín, coinciding with the rugged commemoration of the centenary of the novelist’s death. Galdós is considered the greatest Spanish novelist of his time and Clarín, a demanding critic. The two authors agree in their in-depth analysis of Spanish society and their attunement to the best European novelists of their time. In addition, they believed that Spain needed a «new novel», in line with the most advanced European trends and that it was a useful tool to analyze the changes that were taking place in Spanish society, denouncing in passing prejudices that hinder its modernization.
