Le voyage à Pau avec Jacques Anis : retour sur le colloque de 1997 « Propriétés de l’écriture »

    This article evokes the meeting held in Pau in 1997 on the « Specificities of Writing », where both authors as well as Jacques Anis discussed their views in an interdisciplinary and international way. Beyond the confrontation between the “autonomy oriented” stance (as illustrated by Jacques Anis) and the “phonographist” positions (along the lines defined by Nina Catach), what matters here is to recall the diversity of theoretical approaches, from Saussurian to structural, functional and distributional linguistics, from semiolinguistics to the semiotics of images, from cognitive psychology to genetic studies. The concept of “literacy”, already well-known to the anglo-saxon world and more recently used among francophone researchers, came to widen the horizons of a memorable debate about the “continent” of writing.

    L’article évoque le colloque de Pau de 1997 sur les « Propriétés de l’écriture » qui réunit les deux auteurs et Jacques Anis au sein d’un échange de dimension interdisciplinaire et internationale. Au-delà de la confrontation entre les thèses autonomistes (défendues par J. Anis) et les positions phonographistes (dans la mouvance de N. Catach), il s’agit ici de rappeler ce que fut la diversité des approches théoriques, de Saussure à la linguistique structurale, fonctionnelle et distributionnelle, de la sémiolinguistique à la sémiotique de l’image, de la psychologie cognitive aux études génétiques. La notion de « literacy », déjà familière au monde anglo-saxon et que commençaient à s’approprier un certain nombre de chercheurs francophones venait encore élargir un débat marquant sur le « continent » écriture.
