  • Resumen
    • One could justifiably claim that the American temperance movement is the oldest movement in U.S. history. Although the Eighteenth Amendment was won and lost within a thirteen year period, the temperance sentiment survived and exists today in organizations such as MADD, SADD and even the WCTU (Women's Christian Temperance Union).

This movement is distinguished by its duration as temperance sentiment and legislation can be traced to the colonial period. The temperance movement is also unique in the level of success it reached with a constitutional amendment and the fact that this success was overturned with repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment.
