Throughout its history, the Colosseum has been a source of inspiration and has formed part of the collective imagination of artists and travellers alike. However, in the 19th century and with the development of Romanticism, the interpretation and meaning of the amphithea-tre acquired a series of characteristics of its own. Therefore, the main aim of this study is to understand and analyse how the Colosseum was represented by Romantic writers and artists who travelled to Rome in search of inspiration and evocation for their works.
