    Gestures going together with language entertain strict relations with the production of language. They don’t have all the same function: some gestures are “informative” and don’t bring intentional information; some others are “interactive” and aim to modify or influence the behaviour of the person someone is speaking to; there are also “communicative” gestures that intentionally convey a message. Amongst them, conventional gestures have a particular status because they are understood by people belonging to the same cultural group (e.g., to call somebody, to greet by the hand, to give a nod, etc.). Thus they can easily be substituted for language without great ambiguity. In this article, a parallel is set between conventional gestures and idiomatic expressions, since they share several features (opaqueness of their meaning and origin, illocutarian effects, impossibility to be composed, etc.), while showing the limits of such a comparison.     Les gestes dits co-verbaux entretiennent des relations étroites avec la production langagière. Ils n’ont pas tous la même fonction : certains gestes sont « informatifs » et n’apportent pas d’information volontaire, alors que d’autres sont « interactifs » et visent à modifier ou à influencer le comportement de l’interlocuteur ; d’autres encore sont « communicatifs » et transmettent intentionnellement un message. Parmi ceux-ci, les gestes conventionnels ont un statut particulier dans la mesure où ils sont compris par un ensemble d’individus appartenant à un même groupe culturel (e.g. appeler quelqu’un, saluer de la main, acquiescer de la tête, etc.). Ils peuvent ainsi se substituer au langage sans grande ambiguïté. Dans cet article, un parallèle est établi entre les gestes conventionnels et les expressions idiomatiques car ils partagent un certain nombre de caractéristiques (opacité de leur signification et de leur origine, effet illocutoire, non-compositionnalité, etc.), tout en montrant les limites d’une telle comparaison. Soixante et un gestes conventionnels français sont décrits en annexe.
