    The point of this paper is to argue for the relevance of the paradoxical notion of « partial existence » (as in un commencement de preuve) within the framework of a systematic investigation into the linguistic properties of the verb commencer. The approach developed in this article thus radically differentiates itself from the widespread practice, which consists in referring the different uses of the verb to their relative congruence with a putative prototypic auxiliary function (see the notions of « ellipsis », « type coercion » and « inchoation »): the aim is not to reduce but, on the contrary, to highlight the multi-level variation, in order to bring out the regular principles that govern it, and to articulate these principles to a general theory of linguistic meaning with respect to the identity of language units.

    Cet article argumente en faveur de la pertinence de la notion paradoxale d’« existence partielle » (cf. un commencement de preuve) pour une étude systématique des propriétés linguistiques du verbe commencer. De la sorte, cette approche se démarque radicalement de la pratique courante qui consiste à évaluer les emplois de ce verbe sous l’angle de leur congruence relative à un emploi auxilié réputé prototypique (cf. les notions d’« ellipse », de « coerc[it]ian de type », d’ « inchoation ») : il s’agit non pas de réduire mais bien de mettre en valeur la variation multiforme de commencer afin de découvrir les principes réguliers qui la gouvernent, et de les articuler à une théorie générale du sens linguistique et de l’identité des unités de langues.
