  El delirium también denominado síndrome confusional agudo es muy frecuente en la población adulta mayor, caracterizado por la instalación rápida de alteraciones en el estado de conciencia junto con trastornos de otras funciones cognitivas, con un curso fluctuante y en asociación con una o varias causas médicas identificables. Esta entidad se ha asociado con mortalidad muy elevada y el deterioro cognitivo persistente posterior al delirium.
