Twitter en las aulas del grado de Biotecnología. Ahora es el turno de los alumnos

    Las redes sociales son cada vez más usadas tanto para divulgar la ciencia como para enseñarla. De hecho, por su impacto en la actualidad, al manido “publica o perece” se le debe añadir el dicho “si no te ven, te desvaneces”. Hay muchos ejemplos de científicos que usan las redes sociales como una manera más de comunicar sus resultados o bien difundir sus actividades al resto de la sociedad. Incluso se han montado iniciativas como los cursos on-line por parte de la Sociedad Española de Microbiología realizados por un grupo de profesores e investigadores. En nuestro caso hemos aplicado un “giro de tuerca” y que los estudiantes pasen de ser los receptores de esa información científica, a ser generadores de la misma como parte de su formación científica y académica. Para ello, a un grupo de alumnos de 1º y 2º curso del Grado de Biotecnología se les ha pedido que realicen una serie de “hilos” para ser publicados en Twitter. En el caso de los alumnos de 1º curso, los hilos deberían resumir alguno de los temas impartidos en clase. En el caso de los alumnos de 2º curso los hilos debían de describir el contenido de un artículo científico. Los resultados de aprendizaje han sido prometedores y pensamos repetir y mejorar la experiencia en cursos futuros.

    Social networks are increasingly used both to disseminate science and to teach it. In fact, because of its impact at present, to the “publish or perish” another sentence must be added “get visible or vanish”. There are many examples of scientists who use social networks as a way to communicate their results or spread their research to society. One of such initiatives are the Massive Open On-line Courses that have been set up by the Spanish Society of Microbiology carried out by a group of professors and researchers. In our case we have applied a “turn of the screw” letting the students go from being the recipients of the scientific information, to being generators of it, as part of their scientific and academic training. For this, a group of students from 1st and 2nd year of the Degree in Biotechnology have performed a series of “threads” to be published on Twitter. In the case of 1st year students, the threads should summarize some of the topics taught in class. In the case of 2nd year students, the threads should describe the content of a scientific article. The learning results have been promising and we intend to repeat and improve the experience in future courses.
