    The retrospective study of the "return" of the grey wolf in France and in Europe is an ideal case study for trying to evaluate the impact of the law in achieving environmental objectives. This type of research requires a particularly complex quantitative, not to say empirical, approach. However, it is possible to begin by listing the criteria, legal or extra-legal, which contribute to the achievement of the studied goal. It has been identified that the major legal cause of the species’ return is the inclusion of the objective of its conservation in the European legal system. Other secondary legal factors have also been identified. Precisely, the role of the associative litigations related to the protection of species has been quantitatively studied. Nevertheless, several extra-legal factors, ecological or biological in this case, are also important to consider.

    L’étude rétrospective du « retour » du loup gris en France et en Europe est un cas d’espèce idéal pour s’essayer à l’évaluation de l’impact du droit dans la réalisation d’objectifs environnementaux. Ce type de recherche nécessite une approche quantitative, voire empirique, particulièrement complexe. En revanche, il est possible dans un premier temps de recenser l’ensemble des facteurs – juridiques ou extra-juridiques – de contribution à la réalisation de l’objectif étudié. L’on a alors identifié que la cause juridique majeure du retour de l’espèce est l’insertion de l’objectif de sa conservation dans le système normatif européen. D’autres facteurs juridiques, secondaires, ont également été identifiés. Le rôle du contentieux associatif relatif à la protection de l’espèce a notamment été l’objet d’une étude quantitative. Néanmoins, plusieurs facteurs extra-juridiques, écologiques ou biologiques en l’occurrence, sont aussi importants à prendre en compte.
