Resumen de Els ‘maonesos’ i la Guerra d’Algèria

Many Minorcans left for Alge-ria in the mid-19th century mainly to work as farmers. Becoming French soon after, the diverse 'Maonese' com-munity shared a key element: a passio-nate love of the land, which is why they could not imagine that one day they would haveto leave the village built near Algiers such as Fort-de-l'Eau, Rouïba or Hussein-Dey... When the Algerian war broke out, most of them did not think this would happen, but they had to make choices, not always homogeneous ones. The war and independence provo-ked anexodus of the French and "Mao-nese" populations to France. To this day, testimonies show that the small home-land that was lost to them, that is , their village of Algeria, is still present in their memory. The overseas archives of Aix-en-Provence provide the context, as we wait for the chance to work in the IME archives and collect testimonies in Menorca.

Molts menorquins van anar a Algèria a mitjan segle xix sobretot per fer feina al camp. Esdevinguts france-sos en poc temps, la comunitat ‘maone-sa’, diversa, compartia un element clau: l’amor apassionat a la terra; per això no podien pensar en haver de deixar un dia el poble construït a prop d’Alger com Fort-de-l’Eau, Rouïba o Hussein-Dey... Quan la guerra d’Algèria va esclatar, la majoria no ho creien però els va caldre prendre opcions, no del tot homogènies. La guerra i la independència van provo-car l’èxode dels francesos i dels ‘maone-sos’ cap a França. Encara avui els testi-monis ens demostren que la petita pàtria en endavant perduda, és a dir, el seu poble d’Algèria, és present a la seva memòria. L’arxiu d’Ultramar d’Ais de Provença n’aporta el context a l’espera de poder treballar en l’arxiu del IME i recollir testimonis a Menorca.
