This paper aims to introduce university students to the understanding and interpretation of the material culture of Antwerp in the 17th century through the work of the Flemish artist Clara Peeters (c. 1588/90-post. 1621). Four panels exhibited in room #82 in the Museo Nacional del Prado were selected to study the provenance of the food and objects depicted in them. The analysis also deals with the uses and meanings in the context in which these paintings were created. Furthermore, this paper reflects on how we look at still life painting as spectators and explores the role women artists had in the construction of the visual culture of the Early Modern Age.
