    La gastrostomía endoscópica percutánea (PEG) es el método de elección para mantener una nutrición enteral a largo plazo en pacientes con sistema digestivo funcional pero que tienen dificultad para tragar. Este tipo de sonda presenta muchas ventajas frente a la sonda nasogástrica o la nutrición parenteral pero precisa de un manejo adecuado. Por ello, los profesionales de enfermería estarán bien formados en relación con el cuidado y manejo de la sonda PEG ya que serán los encargados durante los primeros diez días de su utilización una vez que el paciente ha sido intervenido y posteriormente formará al paciente y a la familia sobre el uso correcto de esta sonda.
