Borders within Scotland, both of strongly-defined regions and of linguistic boundaries, chiefly between Gaelic, Scots and English, recognise differences and distinctions exist within a polity within which the capitalised term «The Border» is quite specifically related to the Scottish/English border. The multiplicity of such borders and theirtransgression mark the importance of liminality and fluidity of identities in modern Scottish culture
