A partir del hecho demostrado por el psicoanálisis de que padecemos de memoria -del carácter traumático que en muchas ocasiones toma el objeto de la memoria y de la ineficacia del recurso del olvido, sin pasar antes por la rememoración y la escritura- este escrito plantea la pregunta de si la tarea del historiador tiene que ver con el testimonio en el sentido que da Agamben a este término. El objeto de la memoria que resulta insoportable, que retorna generando violencia, es aquel que redujo al sujeto y a los grupos sociales a la condición de objeto. ¿Dar cuenta de este proceso es un reto de la historia? Retomando el ejemplo de la masacre de las bananeras y de la discusión que sobre su aparición en la novela realiza el historiador Posada Carbó se trata de ilustrar este problema.

Starting from the fact, demonstrated by psychoanalysis, that we are affected by our memory; from the traumatic character that our memory takes in many occasions and considering the lack of effectiveness of forgetting as a protection mechanism, without going through the processed of re-remembering and writing the traumatic events; this text poses the question whether the historian’s task has to do with bearing witness as understood by Agamben theories. The object of the unbearable memory, of the memory that returns generating outbursts of violence, is in itself the fact that diminished the individual and the social group to the condition of objects. Is the challenge of history to deal with this process? I try to illustrate this argument taking the example of the banana plantation massacre in Colombia and based on the postulates of the historian Posada Carbó about the reasons for its appearance in Colombian novels.
