Estabelecidos e outsiders na medievalística contemporânea

    Among Europeans there is a common sensation that Medieval History is written as a study of something that belongs to them. This approach to medieval times is often seen as national history projected into the past, carrying along several benefits and issues. However, would the medieval past belong to them in a superior or specific manner? Would all of ‘us’ be ‘others’, ‘outsiders’ as we promote Medieval Studies from the ‘peripheries’ of the contemporary world? The current article is built as a first approach to these questions, analysing them in two levels. First, the article will present an inventory of the different positions and relations with the Middle Ages promoted by ‘peripheral’ Medieval Studies. The second step will be to identify the perspectives of validation of this part of the past in the current present, i.e., the current need to invest on the study of the Middle Ages.

    Aos europeus é vigorosa a sensação de que fazem a História Medieval como coisa sua, como história pátria que se projeta ao passado, com todos os ônus e bônus decorrentes dessa percepção. Mas, será que de fato lhes pertence, de alguma forma superior ou específica, o “passado” em questão? Seremos, todos nós “outros”, outsiders ao promovermos a medievalística desde as “periferias” do mundo contemporâneo? O presente artigo constitui uma primeira tentativa de abordagem das questões que acabo de evocar, considerando-as especialmente em dois níveis. Primeiramente, realizarei um inventário das posições assumidas pelas medievalísticas promovidas desde as “periferias” quanto às suas relações com o medievo para, em seguida, identificar as perspectivas de validação do estudo daquele passado no presente em curso, ou seja, da necessidade ainda atual do investimento no estudo da Idade Média.
