The church of San Benito was the first and last in the series of fourteen Christian churches and one Jewish synagogue that were built in Allariz. The small pre-Romanesque chapel dedicated to San Benito remained outside the walls until the beginning of the 18th century. Its deterioration, coupled with the increase in worship, led to a new temple on the same site being erected. It took almost one hundred and fifty years, from the beginning of the 18th century to the middle of the 19th century, to finish it. The continual lack of resources resulted in the need to become more resourceful in the search for sponsors. The first contribution was made by A Paneira, an agricultural credit institution. This was followed by the tax on the wine sold in Allariz being implemented and, finally, the last part needed for the work was financed by a collection made from among the neighbors. In 1850, the master mason in charge of the project fell 27 meters from the tower after having laid the last stone; miraculously, he was unharmed and promised to build the altarpiece, the pulpits, and the communion rail.
