    This article is a testimony on archaeological research and more generally on the protection of cultural heritage in Algeria. It deals with the management of the archaeological heritage, through legislation, institutional frameworks, the training of the first generation of archaeologists, the initiation of the first excavations and multilateral and bilateral cooperation in this field. Through the author’s lived experience, it is a question of bearing witness to the achievements, failures and constraints that marked Algerian archaeology during the decade from 1966 to 1976. It provides the scientific community with the data allowing to understand the subsequent development of this discipline in the country.

    Cet article est un témoignage portant sur la recherche archéologique et d’une manière plus générale sur la protection du patrimoine culturel en Algérie. Il retrace la prise en charge du patrimoine archéologique, à travers la législation, les institutions, la formation de la première génération d’archéologues, l’initiation des premiers chantiers de fouilles et les coopérations multilatérale et bilatérale dans ce domaine. A travers l’expérience vécue de l’auteur, il est question de témoigner des réalisations, des échecs et des contraintes qui ont marqué l’archéologie algérienne pendant la décennie de 1966 à 1976. Elle met à disposition de la communauté scientifique les données permettant d’appréhender l’évolution ultérieure de cette discipline dans le pays
