    El reino de Toledo fue una parte de Castilla desde el siglo XI. Constituyó un territorio de frontera con el Islam durante los siglos XII y XIII. En consecuencia, la monarquía castellana instaló a diversas Órdenes Militares para defender al reino de Toledo de los musulmanes durante aquella época. Una de ellas fue la orden internacional de San Juan u Orden del Hospital. De hecho, esta Orden tenía una provincia o priorato en Castilla desde el siglo XII. Sabemos que tanto reyes como nobles castellanos donaron entonces numerosas propiedades a los hospitalarios en el reino de Toledo. En efecto, la Orden obtuvo aquí su mayor señorío de la Corona de Castilla. En consecuencia, los hospitalarios tuvieron que implantar una importante organización a nivel local. Conocemos que instalaron muchas encomiendas o bailías en el reino de Toledo. En concreto, hubo veintiuna encomiendas de la Orden de San Juan aquí durante los siglos XII y XIII.

    The kingdom of Toledo was a part of Castile since the eleventh century. It was a border territory with Islam during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The Castilian monarchy installed military orders to defend the kingdom of Toledo from the Muslims. The international Order of Saint John or Order of the Hospital was one of these. Since the twelfth century, this order had a province or priory in Castile. Castilian monarchs and nobles donated many properties to the Hospitallers in the kingdom of Toledo. In fact, the order obtained in this kingdom its greatest lordship in the Crown of Castile. Consequently, the Hospitallers installed many commanderies or bailiwicks in the kingdom of Toledo. There were twenty-one commanderies of the Order of Saint John here during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.
