In this paper, the author, having in view the liberal and Kantian thesis of the priority of the right over the good, points out the Habermas’ and Rawls’ hesitations regarding the status or the role of sentiments in moral and political motivations. In a second step, he challenges the thesis of moral sentiments, with Humean inspiration, in order to explore the idea of rational motivation. Finally, the author suggests the application of these questions into the discussion on “patriotism/nationalism”.

Neste artigo, partindo da tese liberal e kantiana da prioridade do justo sobre o bem, a autor refere-se, inicialmente, às hesitações de Habermas e Rawls a respeito do estatuto ou do papel dos sentimentos nas motivações morais e políticas. Em seguida, questiona a tese dos sentimentos morais herdada de Hume para explorar a ideia de motivação racional. Por fim, propõe a aplicação dessas questões ao tema debatido “patriotismo/ nacionalismo”.
