Resumen de La autonomía y el compromiso social de la universidad: un recorrido histórico

  La tesis central de este artículo se puede sintetizar en el hecho de que el compromiso social de la universidad anida en el concepto de autonomía. Aquí se exploran algunas notas significativas que -a lo largo de la historia y desde sus orígenes- ponen en evidencia la noción de autonomía como rasgo inherente de la universidad. Se subrayan algunas relaciones con los poderes político - económico, pero también con la sociedad civil; para ello se han seleccionado algunos autores clásicos que han discurrido sobre la universidad y la autonomía contribuyendo a pensar qué es la cosa universitaria. El sino de la institución universitaria y de sus actores es el compromiso social que inspira la gestión del conocimiento: la producción de nuevas ideas, la creación de nuevos modos de comprensión e interpretación del mundo natural y social y la formación de intelectuales y profesionales. Se esbozan, también, líneas que permiten poner en tensión las tres misiones sustantivas de la universidad: docencia, investigación y, particularmente, la extensión; a modo de ejemplo, se desarrollan algunas consideraciones sobre esas articulaciones.

  The central thesis of this article can be synthesized in the fact that the social commitment of the university is rooted in the concept of autonomy. Some significant notes that –throughout history and since its origins– highlight the notion of autonomy as an inherent feature of the university are explored here. Some relations with the political-economic powers, but also with civil society, are underlined; for this purpose, some classic authors have been selected who have discussed the university and autonomy, contributing to think about what the university is. The fate of the university institution and its actors is the social commitment that inspires the management of knowledge: the production of new ideas, the creation of new ways of understanding and interpreting the natural and social world, and the training of intellectuals and professionals. Lines are also outlined to create tension among the three substantive missions of the university: teaching, research and, particularly, extension; by way of example, some considerations about their connections are developed.
