    San Agustín en su obra Del Maestro sólo reconoce a Dios como Maestro y rechaza la idea de que el maestro humano enseñe. Ante esta situación, el interrogante que surge es ¿qué tarea atañe al hombre en su rol de educador si sólo Dios es Maestro? El presente trabajo, luego de un recorrido de los conceptos más relevantes de Del Maestro, propone un análisis tanto del maestro externo como del Maestro interno en cuanto a las tareas que les competen. La conclusión a la que se arriba es que sólo a partir de la enseñanza del Maestro interior podemos alcanzar el conocimiento intelectual verdadero, en otras palabras, la sabiduría. Si bien el maestro humano no puede transmitir las verdades eternas o primeros principios a través de la palabra dado que se hallan en el interior de cada hombre, sí puede enseñarle al educando cómo ejercitar el acto que distingue al hombre del resto de los mortales: pensar.

    In his work De Magistro, Saint Augustine only recognizes God as Teacher and rejects the idea that the human professor teaches. The question that arises in these circumstances is what role do men have as educators if only God can be regarded as Teacher? After the presentation of the most relevant concepts included in De Magistro, the present workoffers an analysis of the tasks that both the external teacher and the internal Teacher have. The conclusion arrived at is that only through the internal Teacher’s teaching we can have access to truthful intellectual knowledge, i.e., wisdom. Even though the human teacher cannot transmit the eternal truths or first principles through the word given that they are inside every man, they can teach learners how to exercise the act that differentiates men from the rest of the mortal: to think
