Founded on September 4. 1781, the puebllo of Los Angeles would have to wait some forty years for its first foreign resident. In all probabillity he was António José Rocha, a Portuguese. Bam in 1790 in Northern Portugal, Rocha jumped ship from the English schooner Columbia in Monterey in 1814 and was granted asylum by the Spanish authoerities. No doubt under the protection of the Franciscan missionaries he settled in Los Angeles, where he was granted the Rancho La Brea and became an affluent cattleman and marchant. He built a house in the pueblo which later became its first city hall. Rocha died in 1837 leaving numerous offspring.
