Resumen de Ouro e prata: Os gestos e os objectos na Lisboa antiga

  In this article, the author analyses an almost unstudied area in the consumption history related to the final years of the former regime: the ornaments and precious metals patrimony. Starting from information contained in the post-mortem inventaries, the author outlines the social diffusion course, from 1750 to 1830, of objects such as watches, snuff boxes, silver buckles, small swords, etc. Confronting the results obtained from other documental sources, mainly from worthless literature and civility manuals, the author emphazises both the gestures and objects' social meaning and the different symbolic and prestige scales inherent to their use. He also shows how a more contained and sober attitude emerges in the beginning of the XIXth century (the silver and gold wear is reduced to the essential), and how the consumption field is crossed by fundamental discontinuities in the individual choices, consequently not existing a simple and unilinear systematization of social tastes.

  Dans cet article, I' auteur analyse un domaine peu connu de l'histoire de la consommation à la fin de I' ancien régime: les patrimoines d'ornements de métau précieux. En faisant cas de l'information contenue dans les inventaires post-mortem, I'auteur trace le parcours de la diffusion sociale, entre 1750 et 1830, des objets tels que des montres, des tabatieres, des boucles d'argent pour les souliers, de petites épées, etc. En confrontant les résultants obtenus avec d'autres sources documentales, surtout la basse littérature et les manuels de civilité, it met en relief soit la signification sociale des objets et des gestes, soit les différentes échelles symboliques et de prestige inhérentes à son utilisation. II montre encore l'émergence, au début du XIXe siêcle, d'une attitude plus modé- rée, ou l'ostentation de l'argent et del'or se réduit à l'essentiel, et que le domaine de la consommation est traversé par les discontinuités fondamentales des choix, n'éxistant pas, par conséquence, une systématisation unilinéaire et simple des gouts sociaux.
