Lower Terciary microflora from the Esna Shale of the Red Sea Coast, Egypt

    • Abundant and well preserved microflora were found in the Esna Shale which is exposed at El-Beida area, on the Red Sea coast. Totally fourty-six species of pollen and spores “mainly angiosperms” were recorded. Pteridophytes are represented by very few forms which have not any palynological significance.

      Marine Phytoplanktons, including dinoflagellates and acritarchs, are also present. Thirty-seven species related to twenty genera of dinoflagellate cysts and acritarchs have been recovered.

      The study resulted in recognition of three main informal assemblage of microflora, suggesting Paleocene-Eocene age. The paleoecologic significance of the investigated microflora and the environment of deposition of the studied sediments are discussed.
