A rich planktic foraminiferal assemblage is recorded from the Early Pleistocene Hijikata Formation in the Kakegawa district, Central Japan. The fossil fauna is very similar to the present day transitional fauna around Japan. Various datum levels recognized in the sequence are correlated with the magnetostratigraphic record. Based on the distribution of planktic foraminiferal species, two cooling events are suggested: one at 1.5 Ma and the other at 0.97-1.0 Ma.
