    The author attempts to determine the consequences to Portugal of the loss of the Brazilian empire at the beginning of the XIX th Century, basing his analysis on the Balances of Portuguese Foreign Trade between 1796 and 1831. The rectification of the up-to-now accepted interpretation of some of the more important tables referring to the Balances is dealt with in the introduction. There follows, in the first part of the article, a study of the state of colonial trade before the ports of Brazil were opened to foreign ships in 1808, underlining the prosperity of that trade and the immense importance of the Brazilian market to the Portuguese economy and, in particular, to its industry. In the second part of the article the author shows the evolution of colonial trade between 1808 and 1831, concluding that this evolution becomes catastrophic both to portuguese trade and industry while agriculture retains a good position in the Brazilian market.

    En se basant sur les Balances commerciales portugaises pour la période de 1796 à 1831, l'auteur éssaie de déterminer les conséquences économiques que Ia perte de l'empire brésilien a eues au Portugal du début du XIXème siêcle.

    Aprês avoir rectifié, dans l'introduction, l'interprétation usuelle de quelques-uns deplus importans tableaux des Balances, l'auteur s'occupe, dans la premiere partie de I'article, de la situation du commerce colonial avant I'ouverture des ports du Brésil aux nations étrangêres, en 1808. TI montre la prospérité de ce commerce et Ia grande importance du marché brésilien pour I'économie de la métropole et, en particulier, pour son industrie.

    Dans la deuxiêrne partie, il étudie I'évolution du commerce colonial, de 1808 à 1831, en concluant qu' elle prend un caractêre catastrophique, tant pour le commerce que pour I'industrie de la métropole, tandis que l'agriculture portugaise mantient une bonne position dans Ie marché brésiIien.
