The clergy, as a privileged Order, has access to a seignorial patrimony, similar to aristocratic property, which the Catholic Church increased through new and specific forms of appropriation over the land revenues, namely the tithe.
In the economic organization of the «Ancien Régime» several functions for which its members were responsible implied the individual usurpation of revenues, due to the fact that entering the Church gave access to positions which went way beyond the strictly religious and moral obligations of the ecclesiastical condition.
In this article we try to present a veriety of prospects, namely: the administration of the patrimony of the Church, of the clercks, brotherhoods, as well as of many laymen; the charge of the bureaucracy of dioceses and monastic orders; taking up public positions; teaching and learning. Nonetheless, these functions were not a necessary condition to everybody's individual subsistence and certainly not for the higher secular clergy or the monastic orders.
