The salt industry underwent a rapid capitalist transformation in France during the nineteenth and the twentieeth century .This process took the form ofusing new sources of energy,mining led to the discovery of saltrack deposits,and deep drilling allowed rich brine to be pumped up to the surface.The modernization of transport networks did away with the obstacles that had hindered inland saltwotks and had kept them confined to a local market. The transformation had profound consequences. Since the Middle Ages, Northern Europe had been supplied with salt from the saltponds on the French Atlantic coast,but from the end of the eighteenth century onwards English salt was used instead.The Atlantic saltponds were abandoned and northern France was supplied with boiling salt from Lorraine after c. 1860.The Mediterranean coastal saltponds of France were equally affected by the capitalist transformation and underwent a concentration of ownership and production.The architecture of the saltworks was significantly changed by the revolution in tecniques.

L'industrie du sel a connu une transformation capitaliste rapide en France aux XIX· et XX· siecles.essentiellement grâce à trois innovations: l'utilisation de nou- velles souces d'énergie, la prospection miniere, l'exploitation des saumures par sondages profonds. La modernisation du réseau des transports supprima les obstacles qui entravaient la commercialisation du sel ignigene lorrain. La transformation eut de grandes conséquences. Depuis le Moyen Age, I'Europe du Nord était fournie de seis des marais de la côte atlan tique.mais à partir de la fin du XVIII· siécle.elle fit appel au sel anglais.La France du Nord fut approvisionnée en sellorrain et les marais de I'Atlantique furent abandonnés.Les salins méditerranéens n'échappêrent pas aux transformations et connurent la concentration de la propriété et de l'exploitation. L'architecture des salines fut modifiée par les nouvelles techniques.
