    En examinant les sociétés Tupi-Guarani du Brésil meridional au seiziême siêcle, cet article cherche àelucider la signification de la dynamique historique indigene dans la formation da la société coloniale, D'abord, trois aspects de l'histoire índigene sont soulignés: 1) Le processus de fragmentation et reconstitution des villages natifs; 2) Les rôles exercés par les chefs et chamanes, surtout en preservant la mémoire collective; 3) L'importance de la guerre intertribale comme affirmation de l'identité historique des groupes locaux. En examinant ces élements à la lumiêre des relations luso-indiennes dans larégion de São Vicente, J'auteurcherche àexpliquer, de forme nouvelle,la résistance et l'adaptation indigenes, aussi bien que les méchanismes de la domination portugaise.

    Focusing on Southern Brazil in the sixteenth century, this article discusses the significance of native historical dynamics in the formation of early colonial society. Initially, three aspects of Indian history are emphasized: 1) The recurrent process of village fragmentation and reconstitution; 2) The leadership roles ofheadmen and shamans, especially in the preservation ofcollective memory; 3) The importance of intervillage warfare in the affirmation of indigenous historical identity. Examined in light of Luso-Indian relations in São Vicente, these elements help to explain not only patterns of indigenous resistance and adaptation, but also the mechanisms of Portuguese domination in the region.
