    Legitimate-illegitimate, serenity-turbulance, continuity-discontinuity, those are the contrasts which atempt to remake a myth in the texts of the royalists. After the trial and the execution of Louis XVI, there are some features wich would be critical in a king but become a reason of praisse in a martyr.

    A possible synthesis shows us a good and generous king, but weak and a victim of men's ingratitude, aware and active, but inefficient, devout but forced to impious actions, well-balanced in his decisions but a victim of radicalisms. Such was, in broad lines, and putting aside the discussion about the ideas of the revolution, the ethereal and weakly mobilizing image of the king widespread after 1792.

    Ce sont les contrastes (légitime-illégitime, sérénité-turbulance, continuité-discontinuité) qui, dans les textes royalistes, cherchent à refaire un mythe. À la suite du procês et de l' exécution de Louis XVI il y a des caractéristiques qui, bien que critiquables pour un roi, sont pour un martyr motif de louanges.

    Une synthese possible nous montre un roi bon et généreux, mais faible et victime de I'ingratitude des hommes, conscient et actif, mais innéficace, pieux, mais forcé à des actes impies, équilibré dans ses décision, mais victime de radicalismes. Tel était, en gros traits et en écartant le débat sur les idées de la Révolution, 1'image éthérée et faiblement mobilizatrice du roi diffusée aprês 1792.
