  • Resumen
    • This paper offers a reconsideration of the date of composition, structure and character of the history of Valerius Antias. Ancient testimony establishes c. 80–60 BC as the date of composition, and attested book numbers show that the bulk of the work was devoted to the recent past. Antias did invent freely, but the extent of his inventions may not have been as great as commonly supposed. He also carried out archival research, particularly in the record of senatorial decrees, and for the Middle Republic used this material to construct an annual framework for his narrative. As a result, Antias' history had greater amplitude of treatment than those of his predecessors, which accounts for the extent of Livy's debt to him.
