• This chapter recognizes tourism, and particularly religious tourism, as a form of intercultural interaction. It also offers background discussion on (i) pilgrims and religious tourists and their motivations and expectations, (ii) secularization and the loss of the notion of 'sacred'; and (iii) the role of interpretation in religious tourism.
