On the second half of the XVIII century, when gold begin to diminish, a significant cultural, intellectual and artistic development happened in Minas Gerais. The author propose a new interpretation to this apparent contradiction, contextualizing and set her in the true cultural system by then built in this region. As a solution to the "decay", the intellectual elite of Minas Gerais came closer to European culture. This fact made her more Brazilian and prepared to think on their own land: the perception of "decay" went on together with the rise of a strong regional feeling stated frequently in the embodiment of nature to the world of affection.

Pendant la deuxiêrne moitié du XVIII siêcle, quand I' or commençait à se faire rare, un développement culturel, intellectuel et artistique notable s' est vérifié à Minas Gerais. Dans cet article I' auteur nous propose une nouvelle interprétation de cette contradiction, en faisant son insertion dans Ie vrai systêrne culturel qui, à ce moment-Ià, existait à Minas Gerais. Comme solution pour la «decadence», l'élite intellectuelle de Minas Gerais s'est rapprochée de la culture européenne. Mais ce fait I'a rendu plus brésilienne et plus apte à réfléchir sur son territoire: l'idée de la«décadence» a été simultanée avec Ie déclenchement d'un fort sentiment régionaliste qui a incorporé fréquemment la nature à I 'univers de I' affection.
