The compliment sequence occurs frequently, yet elusively, within daily interaction. The present research describes 150 compliment sequences that were tape‐recorded in a quasi‐natural setting. A coding scheme for description of the compliment sequence is presented. Results indicate that the way a compliment is worded (i.e., semantic and syntactic formulas), the type of statement that precedes or follows the compliment, and the status and sex of the compliment participants each affect the course and outcome of both parts of the compliment sequence.
