Cet article présente une methodologie pour la construction d'un indice général des prix de consomation, et discute le problêrne de la representativité sociale de ces instruments statistiques. En soul ignant la relation entre Ie coüt de la vie et les sal aires nominaux, on passe ensuite à une perspective des principaux cicles économiques. L'évolution des salaires réels montre d'abord qu'il y a une devalorization progressive du niveau de vie des travailleurs, et que ce déclin, avec des conséquences sur la demande interne, arrive avant la chute des exportations de produits industrieIs pour le marché du Brésil.

This article presents a methodology for the construction of a general price index of consumption and discuss the problem of the social coverage of these statistical instruments. An overview of the principal cycles is draw, focusing on the relation between the cost of living and the nominal wages, particularly in the beginning of the nineteenth century. The estimates of real wages, reveal a progressive decline in the standard of living, with some impact in the demand of the internal market. The conclusion shows that these decI ine is prior to the fall of the Portuguese capacity in the exports of manufactured goods to Brazil.
