    The aim of this work is to decipher the black box of the model of school organization underlying the Military Dictactorship (1926-1933) and the Estado Novo (1933-1974).

    With the aid of macro-educational situation indicators and the legislation network wich regulates the educational system, we will concentrate our analysis mainly on the primary and secondary levels of education.

    The gradual expansion of the social basis of thé educational system is an unvoidable given of the period under analysis. This expansion, however, is undertaken in the light of the sociopolitical «concept» of educability defined by the authorities of the regime: elementary schooling marked off the limit of the expectation of the school career for the majority of Portugueses.

    Cet article a pour but un déchiffrement synthétique de la black box du modele d' organisation scolaire trouvé au Portugal à l'époque de la Dictature Militaire (1926-1933) et de l' Estado Novo (1933-1974).

    À partir de quelques indicateurs macro-éducatifs et de la législation du systêrne éducatif, l' analyse se borne presque exclusi vement à l' enseignement non-supérieur.

    L' expansion graduelle de la base sociale du systeme éducatif est une donnée à laquelle l' on doit faire attention obligatoirement quand on s'occupe de cette période. Elle se développe pourtant à l' abri de la «notion» sociopolitique d' éducabilité partagée par les autorités du régime, pour qui la scolarité au niveau élémentaire établissait la limite de l' espérance de vie scolaire pour la plupart des Portugais.
