Shoemaking was for a long time founded on the skill of the artisans that kept itself quite primitive in technology and work division, being the working knowledge the dominant trait in spite of the combination with mechanical work used in same phases of the productive process.
In this article, the author analyses how Lisbon shoemakers reacted against the changes imposed to their craft by industrial capitalism, mainly in the questions of labour organisation, new techniques of manual or mechanical work, and the reorganisation of the commercial system, which threatened the craft system.

La cordonnerie a été pendant longtemps basée sur I'expertise des artisans et s'est mantenu assez primitive en matiere de technologie et division du travail, dominant le travail-savoir malgrait la combinaison avec la machine utilisée dans quelques fases de la production.
Dans cet article, I' auteur analyse comment les cordonniers de Lisbonne ont réagit contre les changements imposés dans son métier par le capitalisme industriel, en particulier sur les questions de l'organisation du travail, les nouvelles téchniques de travail manuel ou mécanique, et la réorganisation du systeme de commerce que menaçaient la survivance du métier.
