    The Azores played an important part in the Atlantic trade. During the 16th century the growth of the Azorean economy attracted foreign merchants. By the end of the century a small British merchant community began to emerge in the island of S. Miguel. After 1640 and following several treaties between Portugal and England, the number of English merchants living in the Azores and engaged in local and international trade increased. This article describes and analyses their social networks and the strategies chosen to ensure reproduction and upward mobility, focusing on the success of three families: Stone, Chamberlain and Fisher.

    Les Açores ont joué un rôle tres important dans le commerce atlantique. Au long du XVIe siecle la croissance de I' économie açoréenne a attiré des marchands étrangers. À la fin du siêcle, une petite communauté de marchands anglais a commencé à se développer. Aprés 1640 et dans la suite de quelques traités entre le Portugal et l'Angleterre, le nombre d' hommes d'affaires anglais qui habitaient aux Açores et qui étaient engagés dans le commerce local et international a augmenté. Cet article décrit et analyse leurs réseaux sociaux, en mettant en relief le succês de trois familles: les Stone, les Chamberlain et les Fisher.
