This article deals with the problem of agriculture in the island of S. Miguel (Azores) at the end of the 18th century and with legislative measures introduced to foster the development of its main agricultural products, especially corn at the time when notions of a capitalist agriculture and of economic freedom begin to permeate the minds of some Portuguese rulers.

Dans cet article, l' auteur étudie les problemes de l' agriculture dans l'ile de S. Miguel à la fin du XVIIIe siêcle et les mésures legislatives qui ont été introduites pour dévélopper les principaux produits agricoles, surtout le mais, dans un temps ou les notions d' agriculture capitaliste et de liberté économique commencent à penetrer dans l' esprit de la classe dominante.
