A new foraminiferal species Haplophragmoides lincolnensis is described and its stratigraphical and geographical range discussed. The species is shown to have a relatively short stratigraphic range within the Pliensbachian (Early Jurassic) between the ibex Zone (luridum Subzone) and margaritatus Zone (gibbosus Subzone). This, with the species widespread occurrence and distinctive appearance, makes it probably the most stratigraphically important Early Jurassic agglutinating foraminiferal species. Its consistent occurrence also in the North Sea oil province is applicable to offshore petroleum exploration.
