    Soajo, an old and important settlement located in the mountainous interior region of the Minho province, was the object of serious attention on the part of scholars from the second half of the 19th century on. Their interest established ways of describing the region which have become popular trough reiteration, and are influential even today. Here, the author examines the reasons that prompted such interest in this region. The article focuses on the history of ethnographic interests which became enmeshed in expressions of nationalist ideology in Portugal during the 19th and 20th centuries.

    Soajo est un important et ancien village de I' intérieur montagneux de la province du Minho. L'interêt quon lui a porté date de la deuxierne moitié du XIX siecle. Cet interêt a établi des formes de Ie décrire qui ont gardé de l'influence jusqu'à nos jours et qui ont été fort réproduits et popularisés. Dans cet article on cherche à interpretar les raisons qui expliquent I' attention particuli ere portée à ce village. On privilégie l'histoire du regard etnographique et son croisementaveclesexpressions de I'idéologie nationaliste au Portugal au XIX et XX siecles.
