Joana Pierce McMahon, Ana Roldán Riejos

  • The increase in immigration in Spain has brought up a number of issues related to diversity. In particular, the arrival of a number of students from Equatorial Guinea to the Mining School the UPM served as a catalyst for these professors to research into the issues of diversity in education. Non Spanish student enrolment has increased 1000% over the last 10 years. The Spanish immigrant population is the fastest growing among the EU countries. Furthermore, the non-Spanish population is not distributed evenly throughout the regions. This influx is challenging the Spanish educational system. This paper will briefly present the concept of diversity with the variables involved and discuss trends and statistics of diversity in the Spanish educational system as well as the diversity encountered at Polytechnic university of Madrid
