An outline of the history of classification of the «lagenoid» foraminifera (i.e. all of the unilocular hyaline forms other than those belonging to the order Rotaliida) is presented.
The need is made apparent for a through revision of the existing framework, in order to take into account the probable polyphyletic origin of the group.
Toward this end, the following modifications have been made:
The subfamily Oolininae and all of the established genera except Pseudarcella, Rimulina and Rimulinoides have had their diagnoses amended.
Lagena (Reussoolina) has been raised to full generic status, and Lagena and Pseudarcella have been removed from the Nodosariidae and placed in the Lagenidae (nom. correct.).
In addition, the following new taxa have been erected:
Subfamilies: Reussoolininae, Rimulininae, Anturininae, Phialineiinae, Parafissurininae.
Genera: Cribrolagena, Heteromorphina, Anturina, Arthurina, Buchnerina, Cushmanina, Irenita, Pseudofissurina, Pseudoolina, Pseudosolenina, Solenina, Wiesnerina, Phialinea, Walterparria.
Species: Reussoolina parapiculata, Oolina intercalata, Anturina haynesi, Buchnerina iberica, Fissurina abyssicola, F. atlantica, F. britannica, F. macropunctata, F. paralucida, F. pseudoannectens, F. sacculiformis, F. spinulosa, Lagenosolenia arctica, Pseudofissuring mccullochae, Pseudoolina fissurinea, Pseudosolenina borealis, Lagena islandica, L. norvegica, L. subtorquata, Parafissurina costulata, P. pseudocarinata, P. pseudolateralis.
Subspecies: Fissurina alveolata distans, F. alveolata fenestrata, F. alveolata incipiens, F. alveolata pearcei, F. alveolata pseudodanica, F. alveolata quadripeda, F. alveolata rockallensis, F. alveolata sculpturata, F. latistoma imperfecta, F. orbignyana peduncula, F. pseudo- annectens laticarinata, F. pseudoglobosa albomaculata, F. varioperforata parvicarinata, Solenina lagenoides hibernica, S. radiata amygdaloides, S. subformosa fluens, Lagena semis- triata dorbignyi, L. substriata elegantula, L. substriata ornaticollis.
One species of Heteromorphina, 5 of Oolina, 1 of Buchnerina, 4 of Fissurina, 15 of Lagena and 1 of Parafissurina are left in open nomenclature.
The new name Fissurina haynesi is proposed for F. elliptica sensu Haynes 1973 (non F. eliptica Seguenza 1862).
The possible evolutionary relationships within the lagenoid group are discussed, as is its potential applicability in biostratigraphical and palaeoenvironmental studies and its ecology.
