Resumen de Paleoclimatic and Paleohydrologic record of Mediterranean deep-sea cores based on Pteropods, planktonic and benthonic foraminifera

Yvonne Herman

  • The paleoclimatic and paleohydrologic history of the Mediterranean during late Quaternary is reconstructed using deep-sea core microfaunal data. Temporal changes in pteropodal and planktonic foraminiferal population suggests that surface-water temperatures during glacial maximum were as follows: in the Eastern Basins during summer ~3° C lower, in winter ~3-4° C lower, in the Western Basins ~4° C lower in summer and ~5° C lower in winter. Salinities were at least 1‰ higher in all basins. Sub-surface water temperatures were ~3-4° C lower in the Eastern Basins, ~5º lower in the Western Basins and salinities were ~1‰ higher as compared to present-day seasonal values in the respective areas.
