En el último tercio del siglo XIX el Pacífico español se había convertido en un incontrolable polvorín. Diversas cuestiones no resueltas y agravadas con el paso del tiempo, confluyeron en la misma trayectoria y los maltrechos cimientos de una agotada metrópoli se vinieron abajo mediante una insurrección. La política que la monarquía borbónica imprimió en sus posesiones ultramarinas fue fraguando en un movimiento nacionalista anticolonial y antimasónico que llegó a su culmen en 1896 con la sublevación tagala y a la ruptura definitiva con España en 1898.

The Spanish Pacific had become an uncontrollable keg of gun powder in the last third of the 19th century. Several unsolved troubles, aggravated over the time, came together on the same path and the battered foundations of an exhausted metropolis collapsed through an insurrection. The Bourbon monarchy’s policies in its overseas possessions forged an anti-colonial and anti-Masonic nationalist movement. This movement reached its peak in 1896, with the Tagalog insurrection and the definitive break away from Spain in 1898.
