Constantine the African’s Pantegni: The Evolution of Theorica, Book V

    Constantine the African (d. before 1099) was a monk of Monte Cassino and translator of several Arabic medical treatises into Latin. His Pantegni is a comprehensive compendium of medicine based on the Kitāb al-malakī by the Persian physician ʿAlī ibn al-ʿAbbās al-Mağūsī (Latinized as Haly Abbas, d. after 977). The aim of this article is to shed light on the textual history of the Theorica of the Pantegni, Book V in particular. The central focus is the Theorica manuscript that is now Helsinki, National Library of Finland, MS Eö.II.14 (saec. XII3). The contention of this paper is that Helsinki Eö.II.14 combines three different versions of Book V. The manuscript was copied by two different, contemporary hands. The text proper, by Hand 1, transmits the earliest known stage, or Ur-version, of Book V. The marginalia, by Hand 2, are a combination of passages originating either in Constantine’s standard textual version or in a later redaction by an anonymous compiler. These propositions are supported by collations of the marginalia of Book V of Helsinki Eö.II.14 with dozens of other Pantegni manuscripts and the two Renaissance editions. The passages are collated also with the Arabic original, the Kitāb al-malakī, as transmitted in the Būlāq edition of 1877.

    Constantin l’Africain (décédé avant 1099) fut moine à Monte Cassino et traducteur de plusieurs traités médicaux arabes en latin. Son Pantegni est un recueil complet de médecine basé sur le Kitāb al-malakī du médecin persan ʿAlī ibn al-ʿAbbās al-Mağūsī (en latin, Haly Abbas, décédé après 977). Le but de cet article est d’éclairer l’histoire textuelle de la Theorica du Pantegni, en particulier le Livre V. Le manuscrit Theorica, désormais Helsinki, Bibliothèque nationale de Finlande, MS Eö.II.14 (saec. XII3), est l’objet de cette étude. L’article affirme que le manuscrit Helsinki Eö.II.14 combine trois versions différentes du Livre V. Le manuscrit aurait été copié par deux mains contemporaines différentes. Le texte proprement dit, rédigé par la Main 1, transmet la première version connue ou version originale du Livre V. Les notes marginales, oeuvres de la Main 2, sont une combinaison de passages provenant soit de la version textuelle standard de Constantin, soit d’une rédaction ultérieure par un compilateur anonyme. Ces hypothèses ont pu être établies en colligeant les notes marginales du Livre V d’Helsinki Eö.II.14 avec des dizaines d’autres manuscrits du Pantegni ainsi qu’avec les deux éditions de la Renaissance. Les passages de la Theorica sont également colligés avec l’original arabe, le Kitāb al-malakī, tel qu’il est transmis par l’édition de Būlāq de 1877.
