Recently, numerous data on Cretaceous foraminifera of the Austral Biogeoprovince have accumulated especially in Australia and South Africa. An important feature of the faunas here is the occurence of Lingulogavelinella and Orithostella. These two genera are believed to be the most cosmopolitan non-tropical benthonic foraminifera of the Austral and Boreal Biogeoprovinces. In this paper some data on the occurence of Lingulogavelinella and Orithostella in the Utatur Group of the Trichinopoly Cretaceous in South (peninsular) India are presented. One new subspecies-Orithostella indica marksi is described. Lingulogavelinella turonica (Butt) is regarded as a subspecies of L. asterigerinoides (Plummer).
Palaeogeographic significance of the occurrence of Lingulogavelinella and Orithostella in the Utatur Group of the Trichinopoly Cretaceous is discussed.
