  This essay aims to identify and analyze the supernatural elements present in the short story The mass of shadows – La Messe des Ombres (1892), by Anatole France. The facts unfold around a ring that symbolizes the love between two people, a feeling that transcends life and is consumed in an intriguing way, giving a mysterious ending to the tale and the couple’s story. Substantial theoretical bases are from Selma Calasans Rodrigues in her work The fantastic (1988), and of Tzvetan Todorov in his work Introduction to fantastic literature (1975). This work presentes, in an elucidative way, the arrangement of these supernatural elements, in addition to the symbolism represented by this ring, which is marked by love and mystery.

  Este ensaio visa identificar e analisar os elementos sobrenaturais presentes no conto A missa das sombras – La Messe des Ombres (1892), de Anatole France. Os fatos se desdobram em torno de um anel que simboliza o amor entre duas pessoas, um sentimento que transcende a vida e se consuma de maneira intrigante, conferindo um desfecho misterioso ao conto e à história do casal. As bases teóricas substanciais são de Selma Calasans Rodrigues em sua obra O fantástico (1988) e de Tzvetan Todorov em sua obra Introdução à literatura fantástica (1975). Este trabalho apresenta, de forma elucidativa, o arranjo desses elementos sobrenaturais, além do simbolismo representado pelo anel, que é marcado pelo amor e pelo mistério.
